Ekalaiva has three verticals of outreach

Vertical - I Increasing access to education

The economic barriers to education have increased with the ongoing pandemic. Many families have lost their primary earning member over the last couple of years. Secondary school is The dropout rate at secondary school level has increased to more than 17% in India.

Keeping this in mind, we have dedicated a branch to support students and their families who are struggling economically by offering them a scholarship/sponsorship program for their Books and School education fees.

We offer complete and partial scholarships depending on the needs of the student and the abilities of their family.

It costs INR X per year for a child to stay in school. Every single contribution will help keep a child in school.

Vertical - II Physical and Educational infrastructure

Schools are an important place where students are exposed to many ideologies and are part of many firsts. The schooling experience of a student encompasses more than teaching children numerical and language skills from a textbook, it's about shaping self-sustainable citizens who are creative, curious, and capable of self-learning.

Due to financial and spatial restraints, many institutions lack the infrastructural support needed for the students to gain the most from their schooling. They require physical infrastructures like safe restrooms, playgrounds, skill labs, libraries, etc, and educational infrastructures such as teaching curriculums, workshops, worksheets, and other educational aids.

Ekalaiva's infrastructural branch will help rural and suburban institutions provide holistic education to their students by identifying and creating the necessary resources.

We are currently fundraising to set up a Computer Lab in Buvana Krishnan High School, Thiruporur.

Vertical III Parent and Teacher Education

Parents and teachers need to work hand in hand and are the biggest contributors towards the child's positive experience of schooling and the world, therefore their support and education are most important for the children to feel safe and encouraged.

Sometimes these key role models can turn into a barrier for the child's education, this could be due to their social misinformation, self-experience with education, perceived importance of higher education, financial struggles, and even due gender discrimination. Educating the parents on how to be supportive of their children would provide the child with a positive home atmosphere. Similarly, training teachers in different teaching methodologies, child psychology, and conflict resolution skills will help them be the best version of themselves in the classrooms.

This branch of Elakaiva aims to bridge gaps that are often found in the parent-child; teacher-student; and parent-teacher relationships.

Ekalaivan or Eklavya was a warrior of the lower caste during the Mahabharata times. He was inspired to pursue the art of archery and the story goes that he sought out Dronacharya, the royal teacher to the Pandavas and Kauravas, to be a disciple in his gurukul.

Dronacharya refused this discipleship because of Ekalaivan's lower caste and since he is only allowed to teach those of royal descent. Ekalaivan without losing hope returned to this forest, made a clay statue of Dronacharya, named the statue his guru, and practiced archery by himself.

After many years, Dronacharya and the royal clan hear about an amazing archer (Ekalaivan) that exists who is supposedly trained by Dronacharya and seeks him out. Dronacharya is greatly surprised by the archer's identity, his unmatched skills, and his method of learning.

The royal clan is enraged by this display. To pacify their anger, Dronacharya asks Ekalaivan for his right thumb as his fee for having taught him in clay form. The right thumb was considered irreplaceable for the archer, yet without the second thought, Ekalaivan is said to have presented his thumb to Dronacharya.

The stories continue to say that Ekalaivan adopted a new technique to shoot arrows without his thumb and was still on par with Arjuna who was considered to be the best archer of the royal clan.

We aim to create and enable more Ekalaivans' across all genders to become extraordinary in their skills by removing the discriminatory barriers to their access and pursuit of knowledge.
